New Work – Agile working requires flexible workplaces

Mobile and agile are the key words for new workplace concepts that meet the demands of changing work requirements as well as the wishes and needs of the new generation of young employees.

In addition to the fundamental flexibilization of the working world in the form of new working models, the question arises as to how to optimally equip a workplace to meet these new requirements.

Flexibility means being mobile. To promote movement and thus vitality and mental flexibility in everyday working life, a flexible workplace design is beneficial, as the Federal Association for Posture and Movement Promotion (BAföG e.V.) has found regarding movement behavior in the office.

This research project scientifically investigated which design of the primary desk workstation has a health-promoting effect. For this purpose, the workstations of the test subjects (n=16), who already had a height-adjustable desk, were additionally equipped with a height-adjustable stand-sit aid ( ONGO STAND ). The study examined whether the provision of the ONGO stand-sit aid led to more frequent use of the desk's height-adjustable function.

The studies found that, in addition to the height adjustment of a desk, the use of a height-adjustable ONGO sit-stand aid promotes employee activity and movement, thus significantly reducing continuous sitting at a desk. The time spent standing increased by 8.74 percentage points, from approximately 40% to 48%.

Since the test subjects were also equipped with a sensor to record the intensity of movement, the collected data showed that equipping a workplace with a sit-stand aid from ONGO improves movement behavior and thus has a positive effect on the health and performance of the employees.

And what does this mean, conversely, for the equipment of a contemporary workplace? Workplaces must reflect precisely those characteristics that will shape everyday working life today and in the future – agile, flexible, and adaptable to the specific work requirements and needs of the individual.
